PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project, influenced by the Renaissance painter Masaccio, teaches the mathematical properties behind linear perspective. As a twist, Impressionist painting techniques are used to create a landscape painting.
MOTIVATION
Artists use various concepts to create drawings and paintings. Perspective and shading create the illusion of three dimensions on a 2-D piece of paper. The use of these concepts makes a drawing look REAL. Imagine you are on the streets of a big city, looking up at a tall building. As you look down the street, the buildings get smaller and smaller the further away they are from you. That’s linear perspective! So you see, perspective is a very important concept to know when you wish to draw what you see even when you are cartooning.
OBJECTIVES
● Students will learn about Renaissance painter Masaccio
● Students will learn to paint in the Impressionist style
● Students will learn the history of perspective drawing and create the illusion of space using one-point and two-point perspective.
● Students will understand the concept of foreground, middleground and background in landscape.
SUPPLIES (PER STUDENT)
● 8 ½” X 11” newsprint 2 pieces per student (None for Kinders)
● 11” X 17” white drawing paper (Vellum Bristol 67 lb.)
● Drawing pencil, eraser and ruler (No ruler for kinders)
● 1” white bristle brush
● small #1 or #2 brown sable- like brush
● Graphite pencil
SUPPLIES (Shared)
●Small paint palettes
● Tempera paint in the following colors: Light blue, light purple, white, dark purple, dark green, light green, yellow, beige and burnt sienna
ART VOCABULARY
● Horizon Line – A physical/visual boundary where sky separates from land or water.
● Orthogonal Lines – Diagonal lines receding to the vanishing point. These imaginary lines help the artist maintain perspective in their drawings.
● Perpendicular – A right angle to a given line or surface.
● Solid – Having mass; substantial; filling the whole of the space occupied by its apparent form.
● Trapezoid – A quadrilateral with 2 parallel sides.
● Shadows – Dark areas in or on an object. Dark areas are NOT always black or gray. There are many shades of shadow and many colors can be used in a shadow.
● Triangle – A plane figure with 3 sides and 3 angles. Vanishing Point – The point at which a diminishing object seems to disappear.
