Palos Verdes Art Center / Beverly G. Alpay Center for Arts Education is pleased to present The Summer Show, an annual all-media juried exhibition featuring members of the Palos Verdes Art Center’s seven active artists groups: Artists Open Group (AOG), Pacific Arts Group, Paletteers, Peninsula Artists, Photographic and Digital Artists (PADA), The Artists Studio, and The Third Dimension.

JUROR: MICHAEL DAVIS

Michael Davis received his MFA from CSU Fullerton and maintains a studio in San Pedro, California. He has had over thirty-three solo and sixty-five group exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad for museums and galleries and city, state and federal arts agencies. Davis has received two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, the Hand Hollow Arts Fellowship, and an AIA Award of Excellence and has been a visiting artist and guest at numerous university forums.

JUROR STATEMENT

As a working professional artist with both a studio and public art practice, I have participated in hundreds of artwork proposals, RFQ submissions, and competitions. I have also served as a panelist and juror, reviewing and selecting artists for various projects and exhibitions.

With 227 submissions to the PVAC Summer Show and a mandate to limit my selections to fit the gallery space, I had to make difficult choices. As the sole juror, I know the hollow feeling of rejection when an artwork does not make the cut. However, this is the very nature of competition: putting your work out there, continuing to create, and accepting that a selection represents only one opinion and one viewpoint.

I reviewed all submissions numerous times, aiming to approach each piece as a unique vision with its own distinct craft, technique, and singular approach. I asked myself: What was the artist expressing? How did the artwork speak to and reflect our current cultural moment? Or was the goal to reveal the world channeled through the artist’s perception of nature or the mind?

It was a daunting but deeply rewarding task.
