JUROR’S STATEMENT
For some, summer is a time to vacation and kick back. For many artists, personal projects continue to preoccupy their thoughts and process. Summer is another season for thinking, making, sharing, and showing. It was my honor and pleasure to jury The Summer Show.
Assembling a group show is always a complex undertaking. The works on view in these beautiful galleries reflect the hard work of talented artists, which started with an invitation from the Palos Verdes Art Center, followed by hundreds of responses, and a humble juror meticulously viewing the work and selecting a fraction from amongst the submissions.
The work was arranged in the galleries after a lengthy discussion, and a commensurate level of attention to sequence, scale, color, and flow. In addition, there was an unending focus on the correct placement of each work. After all of this, the show was ready to be installed.
Photographs and paintings are hung, and ceramic pieces placed carefully on pedestals. In the end, it is supposed to look like every step was easy, resulting in a wonderful exhibition for a curious public.
I encourage you to immerse yourself in this exhibition. Suspend extraneous distractions (phones, watches, texts, etc.) and focus on the work. Relax in this moment and imagine your real life as just being a human being.
And welcome to your summer!
Dennis Keeley, Juror
