SOLMAZ SHAMS

Solmaz Shams is a Fiber Art faculty member of Palos Verdes Art Center.  She obtained her Bachelor of Art degree in fashion and textile design. She has been a member of Palos Verdes Art Center and the Costume Society of America. One of her works was featured in the 2017 Seventh International Exhibition of Wearable Art Expressions. Since 2005, Solmaz has introduced “felting” technique into some of her designs. She got introduced to this age-old form of textile during her travels to Iran and Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan). Solmaz has perfected a variation of felting technique (Nuno Felting) in which wool fibers are felted through a woven fabric so that garments made with this type of textile can be worn in warmer seasons too. Solmaz also uses a needle-felting technique to create garments and wool-painting, a technique that she has offered for teaching at PVAC, including an online workshop in October 2020.
