SUMMARY:MARIE THIBEAULT: Artist Talk and Guided Walkthrough with guest Mirabel Wigon
DESCRIPTION:  \nMARIE THIBEAULT: Artist Talk and Guided Walkthrough with Guest Mirabel Wigon\nSaturday\, April 4\, 1-3pm \n  \n  \nAs part of The Radiant Rupture exhibition at Palos Verdes Art Center\, Mirabel Wigon and Marie Thibeault discuss the range of works in the show\, the language of painting\, and the landscape as a subject. The conversation reflects a long-standing dialogue between the artists\, developed over many years. \nMirabel Wigon is a California-based artist whose work of flowering plants reflects on the intermingling and entangling relationships in the natural world. Wigon’s work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions both regionally and nationally. Her work is a part of the UC Davis Health Collection and Provost Collection at CSULB. She is currently Assistant Professor of Art at California State University\, Stanislaus\, where she teaches drawing and painting. \nOver more than four decades\, Marie Thibeault’s studio practice has been devoted to examining landscapes shaped by environmental strain. Her large-scale paintings fuse a complex abstract vocabulary with references to sites transformed by climate-related trauma. These compositions suggest conditions of rupture and instability\, yet are held in suspension within luminous\, atmospheric fields of color. Thibeault paints to bear witness and to cultivate empathy\, making visible our deep interconnectedness with the natural world. Her work\, poised between rupture and resilience\, evokes the fragile equilibrium that defines this moment. \nThibeault received her MFA from UC Berkeley and is Professor Emerita at California State University\, Long Beach. Her works have been exhibited across the United States and abroad in cities such as London\, Tokyo\, Seoul\, and Düsseldorf\, and are in the public collections of the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento\, CA\, and the Oakland Museum of California in Oakland\, CA\, among others. Thibeault’s work has been reviewed in multiple publications\, including L.A. Weekly\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, Artillery Magazine\, the Los Angeles Times\, and Art in America. \nSee Marie’s PVAC exhibition online at theradiantrupture.org.

SUMMARY:SHANE O’DONNELL: ARTIST TALK
DESCRIPTION:SHANE O’DONNELL: NEON + RUST\nArtist Talk: Saturday\, March 7\, 1 – 3pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us at PVAC Saturday\, March 7\, for an artist talk and exhibition walk through by Shane O’Donnell. \nA South Bay photographer turned painter\, Shane O’Donnell brings his passion for Americana to Neon + Rust\, a showcase of his recent canvases exploring vintage neon signs and their aging patina. What began as a personal challenge to elevate with paint what he captured with his camera\, O’Donnell has committed to documenting historic neon signage\, along with the building facades that support them\, in a distinctive photorealism-inspired style. The result is a body of work that portrays their decaying beauty with remarkable precision and a fresh perspective that merits a closer look. \nShane O’Donnell is a professional advertising and editorial photographer based in Los Angeles. He was born in Wisconsin and studied photojournalism at the University of Missouri\, Columbia. This is his first solo painting exhibition.

SUMMARY:EUGENE DAUB: Portraits\, Medals and Monuments - LECTURE & BOOK SIGNING
DESCRIPTION:EUGENE DAUB: Portraits\, Medals and Monuments\nLECTURE & BOOK SIGNING\nFebruary 7\, 1-3pm \nFREE \n  \nEugene Daub returns to PVAC to talk about his new book and share stories of his adventures from over 40 years of making sculpture of heroic men and women from the past to the present. \nIn 2021\, Palos Verdes Art Center presented Eugene Daub: MONUMENTAL\, a retrospective of the internationally acclaimed sculptor’s large public works sited across the U.S. This exhibition disclosed the many stages that are crossed in the course of developing a monument – the evolution from a sketch to a maquette\, then an enlargement\, the mold-making process\, and finally the pouring of the bronze and welding it all back together again from many pieces – giving a behind-the-scenes view into the creation of monumental sculptures. \nJoin us Saturday\, February 7\, when Eugene returns to PVAC to revisit his exhibition and sign copies of the newly released book chronicling his artistic practice of over four decades.

SUMMARY:ROBIN JACK SARNER: ECHOES & EMERGENCE Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:ROBIN JACK SARNER: ECHOES & EMERGENCE\nDecember 5\, 2025 – January 3\, 2026 \nOpening Reception: Friday\, Dec 5\, 6-9pm \nThe title\, Echoes & Emergence\, reflects an essential rhythm in my practice\, the continual dialogue between past and present\, between memory and transformation. The “echoes” are the reverberations of personal history\, ancestral influences\, and the fragments of experience that have shaped my sensibilities as an artist. These are not passive recollections; they are active presences\, resonating through material choices\, compositional structures\, and the layered surfaces of my work. \nTo work with echoes is to listen. It is to recognize the ways the past informs the present—sometimes as an inheritance\, sometimes as a burden. My process often begins with this listening\, sifting through the residue of earlier lives: ephemera\, textures\, paper worn by time. Within these remnants lie both pain and possibility\, the shadows of wounds and the light of formative joys. \nThe act of emergence is\, by contrast\, forward-moving. It is the slow\, deliberate unfolding toward a self that is not fixed but in constant becoming. In the studio\, emergence takes form through gestural marks that break free from strict boundaries\, through compositional shifts that lean toward openness\, and through the willingness to leave certain spaces unresolved. If echoes are what anchor me\, emergence is what carries me into the unknown. \nSeen together\, “echoes” and “emergence” articulate a duality that is both deeply personal and universally human: the necessity of acknowledging where we come from while also allowing ourselves to evolve beyond it. My work does not seek to erase the past\, nor does it allow it to dictate the present. Instead\, it creates a space where histories\, both lived and inherited\, can be examined\, honored\, and transformed. \nThe pieces in this exhibition are layered both physically and conceptually. Paper bears the marks of time and touch; pigments accumulate and are scraped back; surfaces are stitched\, torn\, and mended. These processes mirror the ways human identity is built\, not in a single gesture\, but through continuous acts of construction\, deconstruction\, and renewal. \nFor me\, Echoes & Emergence is not simply a title but a lens\, a way of understanding the arc of my own becoming. It is a reminder that growth is not a departure from the past but an integration of it\, that emergence can only happen when we have listened closely to the echoes that brought us here. \nIn offering these works to you\, I invite you to step into that same rhythm: to hear the echoes in your own life\, and to imagine the shape of your own emergence. \nRobin Jack Sarner

DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk: Eric Johnson\nNovember 1\, 1-3 pm\nFREE \n  \nJoin us Saturday\, November 1\, for an artist talk by sculptor Eric Johnson. His exhibition\, ex·cerpt\, is on view at PVAC through November 15. \n  \nInspired by both art and science\, sculptor Eric Johnson creates composite works of wood\, resin and automotive lacquer. Elegantly conceived and meticulously crafted\, the abstract forms are sheathed in resin skins\, often revealing glimpses of skeletal armatures and hidden architectures. True to the definition of the word\, ex·cerpt presents a selected extract from this artist’s expansive oeuvre. \nDating from the 1990s to the present\, these sculptures run the gamut from polychrome to monochrome\, and from voluptuous to menacing. Fabricating his own molds allows Johnson to also work in series\, producing seductive color variations on a theme. Variations are most visible in the Madame X works – all based on the double-helix diagram of a typical DNA strand. This curve structure is a recurring metaphor in numerous iterations both large and small in a variety of materials. Much the same can be found in the serial Heart pieces\, endlessly identical save for their variety of colors. \nWhether wall-mounted\, leaning or free standing\, the work is in constant dialog with both SoCal’s Cool School and Finish Fetish movements\, while invoking Johnson’s own fascination with California car culture. Mentored by the pioneers of the Light and Space Movement\, the artist has gone on to develop his own distinctive style\, capitalizing on his keen aesthetic and inventive engineering. The flawless results appear effortless; belying the exhaustive process developed over decades of experimentation. \nA native Californian\, Eric Johnson attended Los Angeles Valley College\, California Institute of the Arts and received his Master of Fine Arts from University of California\, Irvine. Johnson’s work is in many public and private collections\, including: Oakland Museum; Laguna Art Museum; Museum of Art and History (MOAH)\, Lancaster; CBS Broadcasting\, New York\, NY; Digital Domain\, Venice\, CA; Mary Barnes; Leonardo DiCaprio and James Cameron. He currently lives and works in San Pedro\, California.

SUMMARY:ARTIST TALK: Guillaume Zuili
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk: Guillaume Zuili\nOctober 11\, 1-3 pm\nFREE \n  \nJoin us Saturday\, October 11\, for an artist talk by photographer Guillaume Zuili. His exhibition\, The American Years\, is on view at PVAC through November 15. \n\n\n\nThe American Years is French-born photographer Guillaume Zuili’s love poem to his adopted city of Los Angeles and the desert landscape of Joshua Tree. Beginning with the experimental pinhole camera Smoke and Mirrors series in the early 2000s to his mastery of the lith printing process that continues to be his signature\, this exhibition chronicles nearly 25 years of the artist honing his craft as both a black and white film photographer and master printer. \nThe distinctive point of view from which Zuili sees Los Angeles stems from his childhood love of cinema. Profoundly influenced by the genre of Film Noir\, he has always seen photography in black and white. The lith printing process enables him to achieve the high contrast and grainy shadows that make his Urban Jungle images so cinematic. With their warm sepia tones and minimal composition\, the Joshua Tree series pays homage to classic American Westerns. The viewer needs only to dive into the pictures to make their own movie. \nThere is something compelling in the way this transplanted Frenchman presents these locations as liminal spaces\, located somewhere between myth and reality. It is often said that Los Angeles is not a place – it is a state of mind. Maybe it takes an outsider with fresh eyes to clearly see who we really are. \n\n\n\n\nBorn in 1965 in Paris\, Guillaume Zuili lives and works in Los Angeles\, California. From 1986 to 1995 he worked in India as a photojournalist for VU’ Agency where a body of work documenting the French settlements in India became the subject of his first book\, Pondichéry\, Chandernagor\, Mahé\, Karikal\, et Yanaon. Beginning in 1996\, he pictured Berlin\, Moscow\, Paris\, Prague and Lisbon in a series of double-exposure prints exploring the theme of memory. Since relocating to Los Angeles in 2001\, he has experimented with a variety of techniques to capture the essence of the city and its mythology. His pinhole series\, Smoke & Mirrors\, became a book published by Galerie Clémentine de la Féronnière with whom he continues to exhibit annually at Paris Photo. His more recent cinematic series\, Urban Jungle and Joshua Tree\, reveal his mastery of the creative lith printing process. Awards include the 2017 Camera Clara Award for Urban Jungle and the 2021 Prix Du Tirage Collection Florence & Damien Bachelot. His work can be found in the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (National Library of France)\, Paris\, France\, Marin Karmitz Collection (MK2)\, and other private collections in the US and abroad.\n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:CHRONICLES: The Photography of Ray Carofano\, Curator's Talk
DESCRIPTION:CHRONICLES: The Photography of Ray Carofano\nMay 2 – July 5\, 2025 \nCurator’s Talk: Saturday\, June 28\, 1 – 3 pm \nPalos Verdes Art Center / Beverly G. Alpay Center for Arts Education is pleased to present CHRONICLES: The Photography of Ray Carofano. Curated by friend and artist Ron Linden\, this long-awaited exhibition charts the career of revered San Pedro artist Ray Carofano by showcasing works in a variety of his photographic suites. PVAC will present a curator’s talk June 28 from 1 to 3pm in the galleries. \nFrom the painterly rendered riverrun views of the Los Angeles River\, to his hauntingly decaying landscapes in Broken Dreams\, Carofano takes us on a not-so-sentimental journey\, guided by a discerning eye and keen aesthetic. Whether the subject is abandoned and forgotten or functioning in isolation\, these images trace society’s impact on open space like punctuation marks on a blank page. \nSlab Dwellers and Faces of Pedro reveal this singular photographer’s deep love of humanity and commitment to building community through his art. In these two suites\, Carofano turns his unflinching lens on an eccentric community of desert outsiders as well as locals in his own backyard\, all of them becoming characters in a complex narrative that both reveals and expands the margins of society. \nBorn 1942 in New Haven\, Connecticut\, Carofano studied at Quinnipiac College\, Southern Connecticut State College and Paier School of Art. Largely self-taught\, his passion for photography began at an early age when his parents gifted him a complete set of The Encyclopedia of Photography. \nRay Carofano’s work can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, TX; University of Texas\, Gernsheim Collection\, Austin\, TX; Santa Barbara Museum of Art\, Santa Barbara\, CA; Museum of Photographic Arts\, San Diego\, CA; Galera de Arde Fotografo\, San Miguel Allende\, MX; Fototeca de Cuba\, Havana\, Cuba\, and many private and corporate collections here and abroad.

Alpay Center for Arts Education is pleased to announce 9 x 9: Contemporary Quilts and Containers\, a showcase of artworks by 18 distinguished artists from California’s established fiber art community. SUMMARY:Meet the Artists: Kimiko Miyoshi & Tava Tedesco
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Artists:\nKimiko Miyoshi & Tava Tedesco\nSaturday\, January 4th \n1 – 3 pm \nFREE \n  \nJoin us at PVAC to meet printmakers Kimiko Miyoshi and Tava Tedesco in the Norris Gallery Saturday\, January 4th\, between 1 and 3 pm. Don’t miss this chance to talk with the artists on the last day of their exhibition\, Pressed\, Pulled\, Printed. \nIn Pressed\, Pulled\, Printed\, we invite you to explore printmaking not only as a technical process but as an experience that connects these two artists through the versatile medium. This exhibition showcases printmaking as a bridge between creative practices\, highlighting how its processes blend craft with experimentation and conceptual inquiry. While we honor the art of hand-made multiples\, we also celebrate the print shop as a generative laboratory\, a space for continuous discovery and revision\, where boundaries between disciplines blur and materials are shaped to express underlying ideas. \n– Kimiko Miyoshi and Tava Tedesco \nKimiko Miyoshi’s printmaking experience began as a collaborative silkscreen printer in Japan. She was also involved in the reproduction of Ukiyo-E as a Kira printer. After receiving her MFA in Printmaking from the University of New Mexico\, she built scientific exhibitions for the Explora Science Center\, a children’s science museum in Albuquerque\, NM. The work had a great effect on her creative practice and observational habits. She currently teaches printmaking at CSU\, Long Beach \nTava Tedesco currently resides and works in Long Beach\, California. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Hawaii\, Manoa and her Master of Fine Arts from California State University\, Long Beach. As a mother of a young daughter\, Tedesco is fascinated by the exploratory nature of youth and their environment. Playfulness\, research\, and image analysis are key elements in her work\, which focuses on nature\, color\, photography\, and digital media. Tedesco is an Assistant Professor in the printmaking program at CSU\, Long Beach. \nSee the exhibition online HERE.
