SUMMARY:CHRONICLES: The Photography of Ray Carofano\, Curator's Talk
DESCRIPTION:CHRONICLES: The Photography of Ray Carofano\nMay 2 – July 5\, 2025 \nCurator’s Talk: Saturday\, June 28\, 1 – 3 pm \nPalos Verdes Art Center / Beverly G. Alpay Center for Arts Education is pleased to present CHRONICLES: The Photography of Ray Carofano. Curated by friend and artist Ron Linden\, this long-awaited exhibition charts the career of revered San Pedro artist Ray Carofano by showcasing works in a variety of his photographic suites. PVAC will present a curator’s talk June 28 from 1 to 3pm in the galleries. \nFrom the painterly rendered riverrun views of the Los Angeles River\, to his hauntingly decaying landscapes in Broken Dreams\, Carofano takes us on a not-so-sentimental journey\, guided by a discerning eye and keen aesthetic. Whether the subject is abandoned and forgotten or functioning in isolation\, these images trace society’s impact on open space like punctuation marks on a blank page. \nSlab Dwellers and Faces of Pedro reveal this singular photographer’s deep love of humanity and commitment to building community through his art. In these two suites\, Carofano turns his unflinching lens on an eccentric community of desert outsiders as well as locals in his own backyard\, all of them becoming characters in a complex narrative that both reveals and expands the margins of society. \nBorn 1942 in New Haven\, Connecticut\, Carofano studied at Quinnipiac College\, Southern Connecticut State College and Paier School of Art. Largely self-taught\, his passion for photography began at an early age when his parents gifted him a complete set of The Encyclopedia of Photography. \nRay Carofano’s work can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, TX; University of Texas\, Gernsheim Collection\, Austin\, TX; Santa Barbara Museum of Art\, Santa Barbara\, CA; Museum of Photographic Arts\, San Diego\, CA; Galera de Arde Fotografo\, San Miguel Allende\, MX; Fototeca de Cuba\, Havana\, Cuba\, and many private and corporate collections here and abroad.

SUMMARY:Meet the Artists: Kimiko Miyoshi & Tava Tedesco
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Artists:\nKimiko Miyoshi & Tava Tedesco\nSaturday\, January 4th \n1 – 3 pm \nFREE \n  \nJoin us at PVAC to meet printmakers Kimiko Miyoshi and Tava Tedesco in the Norris Gallery Saturday\, January 4th\, between 1 and 3 pm. Don’t miss this chance to talk with the artists on the last day of their exhibition\, Pressed\, Pulled\, Printed. \nIn Pressed\, Pulled\, Printed\, we invite you to explore printmaking not only as a technical process but as an experience that connects these two artists through the versatile medium. This exhibition showcases printmaking as a bridge between creative practices\, highlighting how its processes blend craft with experimentation and conceptual inquiry. While we honor the art of hand-made multiples\, we also celebrate the print shop as a generative laboratory\, a space for continuous discovery and revision\, where boundaries between disciplines blur and materials are shaped to express underlying ideas. \n– Kimiko Miyoshi and Tava Tedesco \nKimiko Miyoshi’s printmaking experience began as a collaborative silkscreen printer in Japan. She was also involved in the reproduction of Ukiyo-E as a Kira printer. After receiving her MFA in Printmaking from the University of New Mexico\, she built scientific exhibitions for the Explora Science Center\, a children’s science museum in Albuquerque\, NM. The work had a great effect on her creative practice and observational habits. She currently teaches printmaking at CSU\, Long Beach \nTava Tedesco currently resides and works in Long Beach\, California. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Hawaii\, Manoa and her Master of Fine Arts from California State University\, Long Beach. As a mother of a young daughter\, Tedesco is fascinated by the exploratory nature of youth and their environment. Playfulness\, research\, and image analysis are key elements in her work\, which focuses on nature\, color\, photography\, and digital media. Tedesco is an Assistant Professor in the printmaking program at CSU\, Long Beach. \nSee the exhibition online HERE.

SUMMARY:Pressed\, Pulled\, Printed Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Pressed\, Pulled\, Printed: Kimiko Miyoshi & Tava Tedesco\nDecember 6\, 2024 – January 4\, 2025 \nOpening Reception\, free to the public: Friday\, Dec 6\, 6 – 9 pm \nIn Pressed\, Pulled\, Printed\, we invite you to explore printmaking not only as a technical process but as an experience that connects these two artists through the versatile medium. \nIMAGE: LEFT: Tava Tedeso\, Implied Greenery\, 2014\, digital and relief print (detail). SUMMARY:Meet the Artist: Ron Linden
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Artist of the Look of Disquiet: Ron Linden\nSaturday\, October 12 \n1 – 3 pm \nNorris and Welsh Galleries \nFREE \n  \nJoin us  Saturday\, October 12 in the Norris and Welsh Galleries at 1 pm to meet San Pedro CA artist\, Ron Linden.  His solo exhibition\, The Look of Disquiet\, is on view through November 16th. \nI wind up where I wind up\, more by reading than by looking\, because of conundrums that are presented by authors. Whether they’re novelists\, essayists or poets\, they offer me something to build on and that is a pipeline into my brain that comes out in my hands.  \n~ Ron Linden \nThe Look of Disquiet takes its title from the 1935 novel The Book of Disquiet by Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa.  This episodic and fragmented piece is one of many literary works from which San Pedro artist Ron Linden draws inspiration. Modernist writings by French phenomenologist Alain Robbe-Grillet\, avant-garde Irish author James Joyce\, and English stream of consciousness poet and essayist T.S. Eliot have also informed his practice. It would be fair to say that Linden’s oeuvre is a physical manifestation of an intellectual pursuit. \nWorking in a visual medium\, the artist takes a literary approach to his work\, while purposefully thwarting the narrative. Essentially dealing with abstraction\, the paintings create an opportunity for implied narrative\, but oftentimes the viewer is presented with just a study of shapes. Linden explains\, “From their rhythm and displacement and succession you could almost say there is a narrative impulse\, a storyteller impulse\, but sometimes I do something deliberately wrong. I think that is an obligation of artists. Sometimes it’s important to get the wrong note right to make things work.” \nThe Look of Disquiet consists of a body of largely new work. A series of smaller pieces titled Re-boot speak to a period of rehabilitation when Linden tested the waters after a battle with COVID. Also on display are assorted ephemera from the artist’s studio that illuminate the mechanics of his process\, referencing a time when the drafting tools\, triangles\, straight edges and French curves\, became the subject of his work. \nAn unapologetic truth seeker devoted to his craft\, Linden’s career reflects a long history of painting\, beginning as a student at the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign and including a 20-year stint as a scenic artist in Hollywood\, which taught him an economy of means. There remains an economy in Linden’s work as well as an economy of motion. He is incredibly adept at the act of painting. Today\, the artist spends his time painting\, reading and thinking\, and painting some more. The cycle continues… \n________________________ \nRon Linden (born 1940\, Chicago\, Illinois) is a California abstract painter\, independent curator\, and a retired Associate Professor of Art at Los Angeles Harbor College\, Wilmington. He lives and works in the San Pedro area of Los Angeles and has exhibited in New York and California. In 1978 Linden received the individual artist’s grant in painting from the National Endowment for the Arts. His work has been reviewed in Artforum\, ARTnews\, Art in America\, the Los Angeles Times\, the New York Observer\, LA Weekly\, and Coagula Art Journal\, among other media outlets. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Wessel Photography Program at San Pedro & Peninsula YMCA
DESCRIPTION:Wessel Photography Program at San Pedro & Peninsula YMCA \nJuly 9 – August 8 \n2:00 – 3:30 Tuesdays & Thursdays \nAnn & Steve Hinchliffe San Pedro & Peninsula YMCA in partnership with Palos Verdes Art Center ask teens to GET CREATIVE this summer in the Wessel Photography Program. Led by LA-based photojournalist and artist Henry Cherry\, the five-week program will guide you to a fun and engaging exploration of photography! \nTry out multiple processes of photography in various settings and share your work with your peers. You will play with color\, composition\, light\, and shadow to create exciting effects. By the end of the course\, students will be expressing their creativity\, and conversing about photography\, with confidence. This class meets at the San Pedro & Peninsula YMCA for five weeks\, July 9 – August 8\, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-3:30pm. \nThe class is free with YMCA membership\, now offered to teens at no cost for the summer. Details at ymcla.org or contact Gail Phinney at gphinney@pvart.org for assistance. \nTeaching artist Henry Cherry is an award-winning journalist\, documentary filmmaker\, and artist based in Los Angeles\, California. Cherry studied painting and film at Antioch College in Ohio and at the University of Texas Radio Television and Film School. His work as a chef\, ranch hand\, bar owner\, and musician has enabled him to think out of the box\, which aided in the creation of this program. The artist describes his goals for the program in this way\, “As much as a photography class should explore light and angles and framing organically\, it should offer playfulness of spirit and kind intent. If you’re having fun your subjects respond. Photography is something you can do for the rest of your life.” \nThis program is funded by the John Wessel Photography Endowment. For information on how to contribute to this fund\, please contact Community Engagement Director Gail Phinney at gphinney@pvartcenter.org. \nPhotographs from 2023 Wessel Photography Program. \n \n
