SUMMARY:SUFFRAGETTE Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Suffragette: Photography of the Women’s March LA by Monica Orozco\nMarch 13 – May 23\, 2020\nOpening Reception POSTPONED: DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED\nPeninsula Women’s Suffrage Centennial 2020 LINK \n\n\n\n\nWoman have been part of almost every resistance movement around the world at least since the start of the 20th Century. \n– Erica Chenoweth\, Professor\, Harvard Kennedy School of Government \nPassed by Congress in 1920\, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution prohibits state and federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex. The single largest extension of democratic voting rights in our nation’s history\, it was hard fought over a period of decades through militant action\, organized protests at the nation’s capital and suffrage marches across the country. This coincided with the larger\, global women’s movement and the emergence of The New Woman\, independent from her male counterparts. The term Suffragette was first used in 1906 as a derogatory term by a British journalist\, but it was embraced by women in the suffrage movement around the world determined to SuffraGETte the Vote. \n100 years later\, we women are still marching for our rights. On January 21\, 2017\, women took to the streets to influence legislation on human rights\, sending the message that women’s rights are human rights and advocating women make their voices heard by exercising their right to vote. The Women’s March became the largest single-day\, peaceful protest in American history. Palos Verdes Art Center’s exhibition\, Suffragette\, was developed in partnership with the Palos Verdes Library District’s Women’s Suffrage Centennial Celebration. It connects the historical suffrage movement with the Women’s March LA by putting a face on these modern day Suffragettes and highlighting the variety of women of color\, ethnicity\, age and socio-economic status in attendance at the Women’s March LA during the years 2017-2020. \nMonica Orozco (b. 1970) is a Los Angeles-based photographer whose visual practice focuses on exploring multifaceted human experiences through the lens of the contemporary moment. Her photography is informed by the perspective of her multicultural roots. She was moved to document the Women’s March LA in a photojournalistic style\, because\, as the artist states\, \nI felt that it was my duty as a visual storyteller to capture the March as my way of helping the cause. If I could showcase all the emotions during this event\, and inspire others to unite\, that was my goal. The power in numbers is energizing; you feel like One and believe that you can change the course of history. \nGail Phinney\, Curator

SUMMARY:DEB STONER: More Pictures About Flowers and Bugs
DESCRIPTION:DEB STONER: More Pictures About Flowers and Bugs\nFebruary 8 – April 18\, 2020\nOpening Reception: Saturday\, Feb. 8\, 6 – 9pm\, Artist Talk 7pm.\nArtist Statement \nMy work involves keeping an open mind as I use my skills as a photographer\, a researcher and a gardener to make still-life photographs. My background as a jeweler informs my obsession with scale and precision. Since 2001\, an ongoing project involved growing plants to cast in precious metals as a way of freezing a moment\, a routine now mirrored in my current still-life photographs. These complex visual constructs use the flora and fauna of a very small region\, usually my neighborhood in Oak Grove\, Oregon\, to show the viewer unusual details of natural forms revealed at high magnification. Although intrigued and informed by the work of 16th century European floral still life painters\, my current work is more inspired by the tangled and complex compositions of Bosch and Bruegel. As an artist in love with all things photographic\, I work by placing objects directly on the horizontal glass of a high-resolution flatbed scanner. Working with flora that actively fades generates challenges that engage my creativity.  The scale of the objects I photograph is especially exciting when it introduces confusion with no digital trickery: there are summer days in my garden when a watermelon\, picked when very young\, is the same size as a grasshopper. I pay attention to these phenomenal and ephemeral events and make images with them in real-time. \nIn making my photographs for the Palos Verdes Art Center’s Building Wrap\, I was keen on seeing my work on a scale that I’d only imagined. Working with the placement of images to the flat planes of the blocky exterior walls became a way to engage the viewer’s perception of distance. Seeing the highly magnified details revealed on the exterior of the building is thrilling! \nThe honor of wrapping PVAC’s exterior extended to a working opportunity supported by the RLES Burke Residency Program\, with additional funding by grants from the Oregon Arts Commission and the Ford Family Foundation. During that time\, I gathered flora from the area surrounding PVAC\, as well as from the South Coast Botanic Garden\, resulting in new ideas and directions that will influence my future work\, including two pieces in this exhibit. In a sometimes confusing and divisive world\, I believe there is a need and desire for non-confrontational\, original\, and beautiful work that gives people a new way of looking at and appreciating the natural world. I love knowing that my work fits PVAC’s mission of inspiring “adults and children to create\, appreciate\, and celebrate art.”  I sincerely thank all at PVAC for this imaginative and inspiring opportunity. \n  \nArtist Bio \nDeb Stoner is an artist with deep roots in craft and fine art photography.  She holds an MFA in Applied Design from San Diego State University\, a BS Geology from UC Davis\, and a decades-long teaching career at the Oregon College of Art and Craft. She shows work in galleries as well as permanent public art collections\, lectures widely\, is the recipient of grants and artist residencies and sells work to enthusiastic collectors. \n

SUMMARY:Special Mornings
DESCRIPTION:Special Mornings is a venerable Palos Verdes Art Center program serving the neediest segment of the population\, children and adults with special needs.  Special Mornings serves special education classes (ages 5 and up) throughout Los Angeles County.  These classes come from the poorest Title 1 schools.  Through art activities\, participants develop small motor skills\, learn to focus on a task and see a project through to completion.  They also develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills applicable to their academic curriculum. \nSpecial Mornings began in 1981 as a program for differently-abled students and has expanded to include special needs adults at Canyon Verde Activity Center in Redondo Beach.  Annually\, seven Title 1 LAUSD schools participate in a five-week sequential art education program teaching the basics of art\, enhancing the special needs students’ communication skills and self-esteem. Students come to the Art Center for their classes and also tour exhibitions\, all of which is provided free of charge\, including transportation. \nFor information\, contact Education Director Gail Phinney at gphinney@pvartcenter.org
