SUMMARY:Special Mornings
DESCRIPTION:Special Mornings is a venerable Palos Verdes Art Center program serving the neediest segment of the population\, children and adults with special needs.  Special Mornings serves special education classes (ages 5 and up) throughout Los Angeles County.  These classes come from the poorest Title 1 schools.  Through art activities\, participants develop small motor skills\, learn to focus on a task and see a project through to completion.  They also develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills applicable to their academic curriculum. \nSpecial Mornings began in 1981 as a program for differently-abled students and has expanded to include special needs adults at Canyon Verde Activity Center in Redondo Beach.  Annually\, seven Title 1 LAUSD schools participate in a five-week sequential art education program teaching the basics of art\, enhancing the special needs students’ communication skills and self-esteem. Students come to the Art Center for their classes and also tour exhibitions\, all of which is provided free of charge\, including transportation. \nFor information\, contact Education Director Gail Phinney at gphinney@pvartcenter.org

SUMMARY:PVAC ANNUAL FUND
DESCRIPTION:  \nDONATE ONLINE HERE\nSince 1931\, Palos Verdes Art Center / Beverly G. Alpay Center for Arts Education has provided essential art and art education programming to the communities of Palos Verdes and the South Bay. As a privately supported nonprofit\, our remarkable longevity has been made possible through the generosity of our friends\, who have time and again contributed to our success. To continue to serve the community\, we ask your support for our 2019–2020 Annual Fund campaign. \nOur exhibitions celebrate our local artists and also bring important national and international artistic programming to our communities. This December\, PVAC is honored to present Jan Napolitan: Joy / 40 Years in the Ceramics Studio\, a retrospective of works by one of the Art Center’s most beloved instructors along with The Winter Show: PVAC Members Juried Exhibition. These exhibitions follow On the Surface: Wallpaper from 1797 to the Present\, recently heralded by Architectural Digest\, Southbay HOME\, and the Los Angeles Times. \nOur Palos Verdes community continues to be well served by PVAC. Art At Your Fingertips docents taught lessons to over 7\,000 local school children this year\, while classes taught at The Studio School provide foundation skills to aspiring artists of all ages. \nOutreach to nearby communities is enhanced by the John Wessel Photography Program\, which this fall taught photography fundamentals to youth in Harbor City for the third year. We continue photography classes at The Beacon House\, a men’s residential addiction treatment program. With your gift\, these art programs and more will continue and grow. \nFunds raised in this annual campaign go directly to current operations\, supporting our classes\, exhibitions\, community education\, and outreach programs – especially for children. With your help\, we can reach our $50\,000 goal for the 2019–2020 Annual Fund. \nPlease give as generously as you can. \nSincerely\, \nLeslie A. Burke \nInterim CEO / Executive Director

SUMMARY:Author Talk and Book Signing\, Zuber: Two Centuries of Panoramic Wallpaper
DESCRIPTION:Join author Brian D. Coleman\, MD\, at PVAC for an author’s lecture on his new book\, Zuber: Two Centuries of Panoramic Wallpaper. This is a companion event to the exhibition\, On the Surface: Wallpaper from 1797 to the Present\, featuring historic panoramas and repeats by the world’s oldest wallpaper design and manufactury\, Zuber & Cie. This event is free to the public; RSVP requested\, click HERE. \nSince its founding in 1797\, Zuber & Cie wallpapers’ fame has spread far and wide\, from King Louis Philippe awarding Jean Zuber the Legion of Honor in 1834 to Jackie Kennedy installing Zuber’s “Vues de l’Amérique du Nord” in the White House. According to France Today\, the company still uses the same antique woodblocks\, the same paint formulas\, and the same time-honored processes to create its stunning wallpapers as it did in Jean Zuber’s time. \nGorgeous displays of friezes\, borders\, ceiling roses\, and architectural trompe l’oeil\, have been photographed for Zuber in homes in the United States\, France\, and the United Kingdom. \nBrian D. Coleman\, MD\, divides his time between Seattle and New York. Brian is the author of 21 books on the decorative arts\, including the recent titles Farrow & Ball\, Fortuny\, and D. SUMMARY:2nd PVAC Building Wrap Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:PVAC is pleased to announce that a proposal by Portland\, Oregon artist Deb Stoner has been chosen from nearly 200 international entries as the design for our next building wrap. The wrap will be printed and installed by Los Angeles large format printers CR+A Custom. Their treatment of our current wrap\, featuring iconic portraits by Hollywood photographer Douglas Kirkland\, was named by Big Picture magazine one of twelve Best of Wide Format Awards this year. Deb Stoner’s design\, derived from her plant photography\, will be mounted to coincide with our Fall exhibitions opening reception on September 7\, 2019. \nDeb Stoner’s work in still life photography involves making complex visual constructs using the flora and small fauna of specific places. She is drawn to imperfections in the natural world and seeks tiny ephemeral events to choreograph in real-time. Composed on a flatbed scanner\, the lush\, neo-baroque compositions examine highly magnified details of natural forms. \nDeb holds an MFA in Applied Design from SDSU\, a BS in Geology from UC Davis\, and has enjoyed a decades-long teaching career at Oregon College of Art and Craft. Recently she presented lectures on photography to the Yuma Symposium\, the Portland Art Museum\, the SPENW Regional Conference; had numerous solo shows and group exhibitions; juried purchases in the permanent public art collections at University of Oregon\, OHSU\, PCC\, and Portland International Airport; is the recipient of grants and a recent residency; and sells work to enthusiastic collectors.

SUMMARY:OPENING RECEPTION\, BENNETT LIEBERMAN: PHYSICS & LIGHT / ART vs SCIENCE
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Saturday\, September 7\, 2019\, 6-9pm \nBennett Lieberman’s largely text and color-based visual art explores the relationship between color\, image\, and language. In the present exhibition\, he integrates imagery and ideas from mathematics and science\, disciplines in which he has previously worked and that still hold sway in his current aesthetic thought and studio practice. The artist also includes a table delineating similarities and differences between artistic and scientific endeavors. \nPoems or fragments of language\, when viewed as overlays to color fields or as collage elements in other fine-art objects\, acquire physical characteristics. Conversely\, the visual elements in paintings\, photographs\, and videos resonate with transient and oblique meanings evoked by the associated texts. \nBennett Lieberman is a poet and visual artist who has worked in academia as a theoretical particle physicist and in finance as a quantitative trader. The mysteries of nature and language\, and a desire to engage in practices that develop them\, have been common threads in his research\, his writing\, and the art projects he pursues. He lives and works in New York.

SUMMARY:OPENING RECEPTION\, COVER THESE WALLS
DESCRIPTION:COVER THESE WALLS \nOpening Reception:  Saturday\, September 7\, 2019\, 6-9pm \nLast winter\, a request for proposals for our next building wrap was sent out through Sculpture Magazine\, published by the International Sculpture Center\, and CallForEntry.org\, a well-known arts portal visited by professional artists worldwide. Almost two hundred submissions were received from designers\, architectural firms\, and studio artists from Los Angeles to New York\, London to Japan. An exceptionally high percentage were extremely interesting and worthy of display. \nSelect design proposals submitted for the Second PVAC Building Wrap will be presented in Cover These Walls\, opening September 6th. The designs are as varied as the artists themselves. Vector graphics abound\, presenting abstract patterns as well as recognizable objects. Some designs focus on color studies; others are distinguished by the use of bold black and white. Photo-collage is combined with street-style drawing in some and with text in others. One of our favorite proposals captures the child-like delight of drawing in crayon outside the lines. The exhibition continues through October 26.
