SUMMARY:Meet the Artist: Anne Olsen Daub
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, February 24th\, from 1 to 3pm to meet artist Anne Olsen Daub at her exhibition\, MULTI-FACETED\, on view in the Norris and Welch Galleries. \n“Found objects are constantly seducing me. The allure of the discarded is the basis of my artist journey. My art is a testament to the evocative power of storytelling and jewelry’s ability to carry profound messages and reflect the complexities of our world. I see beautiful antique objects that have had a prior function and reimagine them into an elegant new beginning with new purpose. Exploring and combining these objects with contemporary materials creates an interplay of memory and presence. The political\, mournful\, spiritual monuments\, and societal aspects that jewelry can symbolize are my inspiration. In each opulent and oversized sculpture and wearable piece\, I encapsulate the essence of an icon or emblematic expression of its era. It is my wish that viewers and wearers alike will embark on their own personal journey of re-imagination. My goal is to provoke contemplation of the past while taking individuals to realms where the familiar becomes elevated and extraordinary.” \nAnne Olsen Daub \nSan Pedro-based artist Anne Olsen Daub attended Fresno City College for Fine Art and Otis College of Art and Design majoring in fashion design. She has been a fine artist\, sculptor\, and jewelry designer for over 25 years. Anne has had careers in the fashion industry and at Mattel Toys where she created designs for Barbie. She has been a member of the Los Angeles Assemblage Group\, exhibited at Angels Gate Cultural Center\, Michael Stearns Studio @ The Loft. She is a member of the National Sculpture Society.

SUMMARY:OPENING RECEPTION\, Lawrence T. Yun: Engineered Botanicals
DESCRIPTION:Lawrence T. Yun: Engineered Botanicals\nOPENING RECEPTION December 1st\, 6 – 9pm \nPalos Verdes Art Center is pleased to present Lawrence T. Yun: Engineered Botanicals\, on view from December 1\, 2023 through January 6\, 2024. The exhibition surveys the artist’s extensive catalog of watercolor paintings from 1999- 2019—featuring 51 botanical depictions and explorations ranging from observational to imaginary compositions. \nLawrence T. Yun’s take on the botanical watercolor genre delivers a fresh perspective with modernized associations and energized interpretations. The exhibition features the artist’s many thematic directives from several series\, including ManipuNature\, Hybrid Romance\, and Greenhouse Laboratory. \nOriginally from Taiwan\, Yun’s artistic background and educational training in both Eastern and Western cultures have enabled him to fuse both cultural aesthetics\, adopting certain artistic elements and sensitivities from each tradition with the incorporation of man-made artifacts that\, when combined\, generate new visual dynamics. These botanical inspired paintings are meant to be aesthetically pleasing\, yet the deliberate awkwardness of the structured subject matter has been manipulated within the composition to convey subtle messages that prompts the audience to question the imagery. \nSymbolic references are strategically and metaphorically implemented in the paintings to provide more than one interpretation for the narratives. In particular\, the red cords from the art of traditional Chinese knotting are used to represent both an ancestral connection and an apparatus of constraint. These images often reveal the intriguing and contradictory relationship between culture and nature—man-made creation versus natural phenomena. The visual twist also hints the significance of evolutionary progression by genetically modified and biologically enhanced experiments throughout all aspects of life. \nYun is a Los Angeles artist and a Professor of Art at CSUF. He has exhibited in galleries and museums throughout California\, including Santa Monica Bergamot Station’s Schomburg Gallery\, Patricia Correia Gallery\, and Sarah Lee Art Works/Projects as well as Torrance Art Museum\, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery\, and Los Angeles International Airport. Yun’s works are represented in various private and public permanent collections\, including Sony Pictures\, The Franklin Mint\, and Terranea Resort. Additionally\, his work can also be seen in television programs\, including Luck (HBO)\, The Guardian (CBS)\, and Knight Rider 2008 (NBC); and movies\, including Meet the Fockers (Universal Pictures)\, Daddy Day Care (Columbia Pictures)\, and Transformers (DreamWorks).

SUMMARY:The Winter Show Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Winter Show\nOPENING RECEPTION December 1st\, 6 – 9pm \n  \nThis juried all-media exhibition hosted by Palos Verdes Art Center is open exclusively to Palos Verdes Art Center (PVAC) members. \nJUROR: Paloma Barhaugh-Bordas \nOriginally from Denver\, Paloma Barhaugh-Bordas is a printmaker\, artist\, educator and activist who reckons with what it means to live within the complicated\, blurry lines of borders and ancestral lands. They earned their BA at Carleton College and their MFA in printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design. Paloma’s work aims to portray the intersections between humans and nature\, merging the two for insights on migration\, queerness\, and ever-shifting socio-geographic boundaries. To portray these aspects in regard to the living world around us\, they utilize textiles\, cyanotype\, and mesh fabric printed with designs of trees\, sky\, and water. Their work has been shown at both national and international venues such as the Handwerker Gallery\, Buffalo Artist’s Studios\, and Sediment Arts. They have attended residencies at Casa Lu\, ACRE\, the Women’s Studio Workshop\, the Kala Art Institute and at Japan’s Mi-Lab\, and are now based in Los Angeles\, CA.

SUMMARY:Talk by Palos Verdes history authority\, Dana Graham
DESCRIPTION:Talk by Palos Verdes history authority\, Dana Graham\nAugust 19\, 1pm \n\nThe presentation discusses events and developments on Palos Verdes Peninsula from 1911 until 1973\, covering the often turbulent and tenuous development of the Peninsula\, including little known facts and explains how certain things became as they are today — how many of the streets got paved\, why streets are blocked from going into the Riviera\, the one-time prison in PV\, etc. Dana Graham knew some of the founding fathers personally as a kid in the ’50s and ‘60s. For example\, Fred Roessler was one of his father’s tennis partners. This talk covers the development of the Peninsula from a first-hand perspective\, and includes stories told Dana by his parents. Don’t miss this personal take on the history of Palos Verdes. \nBio: Born in 1947 at 3405 Via Palomino (literally in the house)\, Dana grew up in PV\, and went to the PV schools. His parents were very involved in the community. His father was an artist by profession and a member the School Board through the ’60s and ’70s and was one of the first presidents of the South Coast Botanic Garden.  His mother ran the Peninsula Music Fair\, Art for Fun(d)s Sake\, and the Yule Parlor Parade homes tour for many years. He graduated from Rolling Hills High in 1966 and UCLA in 1970 majoring in military history and music\, was on the track team\, and sang with the Roger Wagner Chorale. Following active duty in the Marine Corps\, Dana went into the stereo business starting at Mr B for Music in the Peninsula Center. From there he took a job at Bose Corp in Framingham\, Mass\, and then with James B Lansing Sound (JBL) where\, in the early 1980s\, he was Vice President of US Sales. He resigned his position at JBL and went into real estate on the Hill and has continued since. Hobbies are singing Renaissance music\, building 5′ long model warships from scratch where the guns fire and they go at scale speed\, and giving lectures on military Palos Verdes history\, and the Myths and Realities of Real Estate

SUMMARY:Michael Davis: Perception Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:MICHAEL DAVIS: PERCEPTION\nPalos Verdes Art Center/Beverly G. Alpay Center for Arts Education is pleased to announce Michael Davis: Perception\, on view May 5 through July 8\, 2023. An artist reception will be held Saturday\, June 10\, 6-9 pm. The art includes works presented to be viewed with 3D glasses\, provided by PVAC. \n“While navigating Landsat records of Earth’s land surfaces from space I discovered large areas of disturbed landscapes. These were immense open pit mines at numerous locations world wide\, many of which were Rare Earth mines or REEs. The mining and processing to separate the rare earth elements is an environmental conundrum. On one hand these elements are in extremely high demand and necessary for electric vehicles and digital devices. On the other\, these mining operations disrupt and destroy huge areas of open land\, displace whole communities and exploit and deplete natural resources leaving behind toxic waste degradation. I began to incorporate these Landsat images into a new body of work titled “Rare Earth.” \nEach Rare Earth artwork includes an archival image of a specific mine rendered in classic 3D  (anaglyph) off-registration referencing mid-century exuberant optimism\, geo-political history\, cultural signifiers\, symbolic design patterns and phenomena. They are built from a collection of found materials\, fabrics\, wallpapers\, digital imagery\, paint\, and precious metals. The digital Landsat image is positioned in juxtaposition to the other compositional elements to create a disruptive collage/painting of spacial contradictions\, surface/depth and multiple cultural interpretations.” \nMichael Davis \nMichael Davis received his MFA from CSU Fullerton and maintains a studio in San Pedro\, California. He has had over thirty-three solo and sixty-five group exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad for museums and galleries and city\, state and federal arts agencies. Davis has received two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships\, the Hand Hollow Arts Fellowship\, and an AIA Award of Excellence and has been a visiting artist and guest at numerous university forums. \nWearing face masks is strongly encouraged when visiting the Art Center.

SUMMARY:CONNECTIVE THREADS Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:CONNECTIVE THREADS\nFiber Art from Southern California\nCurated by Carrie Burckle and Jo Lauria\nJanuary 28 – April 15\, 2023\nArtists’ Reception February 4\, 6-9pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPalos Verdes Art Center / Beverly G. Alpay Center for Arts Education is pleased to announce Connective Threads\, a survey of contemporary fiber art in Southern California. Organized by Palos Verdes Art Center\, the exhibition is curated by Carrie Burckle and Jo Lauria. Connective Threads opens January 28 and runs through April 15\, 2023. An artists’ reception will be held February 4 from six to nine pm. Proof of vaccination is required for attendance in accordance with PVAC policy. \nExhibiting artists include Fafnir Adamites\, Casey Baden\, Jim Bassler\, Cameron Taylor-Brown\, Ben Cuevas\, Renata Daina\, Gail Fraser\, Phyllis Green\, Lydia Tjioe Hall\, Molly Haynes\, Annette Heully\, Dong Kyu Kim\, Michael Koch\, Jeanne Medina Le\, Mary Little\, Carmen Mardonez\, Victoria May\, Blue McRight\, Diane Meyer\, Dominga Opazo\, Claudia Parducci\, Michael F. Rohde\, Gwen Samuels\, Lorenzo Hurtado Segovia\, Meredith Strauss\, Carol Shaw-Sutton\, Regina Vorgang\, and Kay Whitney.  \nConnective Threads provides a window into what is currently engaging fiber artists\, even as this discipline continues to evolve and change. Emanating from artists’ studios in Southern California\, the exhibition offers unique perspectives on the complicated identities of fiber art as a genre. Fiber artists can formally exploit the medium’s connections to pattern\, color\, shape\, and texture. Multilayered content can also be woven into its structure through abstract\, representational\, or narrative strategies. The works on view encompass a rich diversity of influences and inspirations\, independent from conventional expectations. Collectively they offer a penetrating examination of fiber’s possibilities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCURATORS\nCarrie Burckle is a visual artist\, educator\, and founding member of Textile Arts Los Angeles. She has an extensive teaching history in the Los Angeles public schools\, and at California State University Northridge\, San Diego State\, Cal State LA\, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and Woodbury University. SUMMARY:TED TWINE: Conversations with the Artist
DESCRIPTION:Ted Twine: Conversations with the Artist\nDecember 17\, 3 – 6pm\n\n\nVerdes Art Center / Beverly G. Alpay Center for Arts Education is pleased to present Ted Twine: Deep Flat Theory. A special event\, “Conversations with the Artist\,” will be held in the Norris Gallery this Saturday\, December 17\, from 3 to 6 pm. At 4pm the artist will speak briefly on the subject “How to Look at Art (and the World) and Really See It\,” followed by a Q & A. Proof of vaccination is required for attendance in accordance with PVAC policy.\n\nInfluences as varied as Tantric art\, the cut-outs of late-stage Matisse\, and historic Japanese painting and woodblock printing have found their way into Ted Twine’s art. An exploration of consciousness and perception is at the root of Twine’s approach to image making. Flatness of backgrounds and of shapes\, with no attempt to create the illusion of three-dimensional space\, allows the shape itself to be assertive.\n\nShape is made apparent by its color. Depth is suggested within a relatively flat field with lines branching along the surface\, suggesting perpendicular space. Seeing both possibilities at the same time is the key to “deep flat” vision.\n\nThe phrase “deep flat” suggests a coexistence of oppositional or contrasting characteristics\, like universal/personal\, hard/soft\, bright/muted\, serious/humorous. Twine believes that good art\, whether visual\, literary or musical\, tends to stretch our minds to absorb\, rather than resist\, paradox\, invoking the imagination and establishing “a viewpoint beyond normal perception and understanding.”

SUMMARY:Ted Twine: Deep Flat Theory Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Ted Twine: Deep Flat Theory\nDecember 2\, 2022 – January 7\, 2023 \nOpening Reception Friday\, Dec 2\, 6 – 9pm \n  \n  \nI live and work in the Port of Los Angeles community of San Pedro (which happens to be my hometown) since returning from Japan in the mid-80s. Among a small\, eccentric and dedicated group of serious artists who have set up shop here over the years\, I have found that the contrast between the industrial environment of the harbor\, the rugged coastline\, the hills of the town and peninsula behind it\, makes for a stimulating place to live and do creative work. \nI think of myself as attempting to produce a playful sort of abstraction with quirky spiritual undertones—imagery which\, though reflecting a mode of perception arrived at through non-Western contemplative practices and study\, yet does not take itself too seriously. The process of teasing out a finished work that feels whole and balanced\, yet remains elusive to the rational mind is\, to me\, fun\, meaningful and challenging. \nTed Twine \n  \n
