SUMMARY:CONNECTIVE THREADS Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:CONNECTIVE THREADS\nFiber Art from Southern California\nCurated by Carrie Burckle and Jo Lauria\nJanuary 28 – April 15\, 2023\nArtists’ Reception February 4\, 6-9pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPalos Verdes Art Center / Beverly G. Alpay Center for Arts Education is pleased to announce Connective Threads\, a survey of contemporary fiber art in Southern California. Organized by Palos Verdes Art Center\, the exhibition is curated by Carrie Burckle and Jo Lauria. Connective Threads opens January 28 and runs through April 15\, 2023. An artists’ reception will be held February 4 from six to nine pm. Proof of vaccination is required for attendance in accordance with PVAC policy. \nExhibiting artists include Fafnir Adamites\, Casey Baden\, Jim Bassler\, Cameron Taylor-Brown\, Ben Cuevas\, Renata Daina\, Gail Fraser\, Phyllis Green\, Lydia Tjioe Hall\, Molly Haynes\, Annette Heully\, Dong Kyu Kim\, Michael Koch\, Jeanne Medina Le\, Mary Little\, Carmen Mardonez\, Victoria May\, Blue McRight\, Diane Meyer\, Dominga Opazo\, Claudia Parducci\, Michael F. Rohde\, Gwen Samuels\, Lorenzo Hurtado Segovia\, Meredith Strauss\, Carol Shaw-Sutton\, Regina Vorgang\, and Kay Whitney.  \nConnective Threads provides a window into what is currently engaging fiber artists\, even as this discipline continues to evolve and change. Emanating from artists’ studios in Southern California\, the exhibition offers unique perspectives on the complicated identities of fiber art as a genre. Fiber artists can formally exploit the medium’s connections to pattern\, color\, shape\, and texture. Multilayered content can also be woven into its structure through abstract\, representational\, or narrative strategies. The works on view encompass a rich diversity of influences and inspirations\, independent from conventional expectations. Collectively they offer a penetrating examination of fiber’s possibilities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCURATORS\nCarrie Burckle is a visual artist\, educator\, and founding member of Textile Arts Los Angeles. She has an extensive teaching history in the Los Angeles public schools\, and at California State University Northridge\, San Diego State\, Cal State LA\, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and Woodbury University. Burckle has been an adjunct faculty member in the Fiber program at CSULB since 2002. SUMMARY:TED TWINE: Conversations with the Artist
DESCRIPTION:Ted Twine: Conversations with the Artist\nDecember 17\, 3 – 6pm\n\n\nVerdes Art Center / Beverly G. Alpay Center for Arts Education is pleased to present Ted Twine: Deep Flat Theory. A special event\, “Conversations with the Artist\,” will be held in the Norris Gallery this Saturday\, December 17\, from 3 to 6 pm. At 4pm the artist will speak briefly on the subject “How to Look at Art (and the World) and Really See It\,” followed by a Q & A. Proof of vaccination is required for attendance in accordance with PVAC policy.\n\nInfluences as varied as Tantric art\, the cut-outs of late-stage Matisse\, and historic Japanese painting and woodblock printing have found their way into Ted Twine’s art. An exploration of consciousness and perception is at the root of Twine’s approach to image making. Flatness of backgrounds and of shapes\, with no attempt to create the illusion of three-dimensional space\, allows the shape itself to be assertive.\n\nShape is made apparent by its color. Depth is suggested within a relatively flat field with lines branching along the surface\, suggesting perpendicular space. Seeing both possibilities at the same time is the key to “deep flat” vision.\n\nThe phrase “deep flat” suggests a coexistence of oppositional or contrasting characteristics\, like universal/personal\, hard/soft\, bright/muted\, serious/humorous. Twine believes that good art\, whether visual\, literary or musical\, tends to stretch our minds to absorb\, rather than resist\, paradox\, invoking the imagination and establishing “a viewpoint beyond normal perception and understanding.”

SUMMARY:Ted Twine: Deep Flat Theory Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Ted Twine: Deep Flat Theory\nDecember 2\, 2022 – January 7\, 2023 \nOpening Reception Friday\, Dec 2\, 6 – 9pm \n  \n  \nI live and work in the Port of Los Angeles community of San Pedro (which happens to be my hometown) since returning from Japan in the mid-80s. Among a small\, eccentric and dedicated group of serious artists who have set up shop here over the years\, I have found that the contrast between the industrial environment of the harbor\, the rugged coastline\, the hills of the town and peninsula behind it\, makes for a stimulating place to live and do creative work. \nI think of myself as attempting to produce a playful sort of abstraction with quirky spiritual undertones—imagery which\, though reflecting a mode of perception arrived at through non-Western contemplative practices and study\, yet does not take itself too seriously. The process of teasing out a finished work that feels whole and balanced\, yet remains elusive to the rational mind is\, to me\, fun\, meaningful and challenging. \nTed Twine \n  \n

Anderson. The exhibition featuring 50 paintings will open at Palos Verdes Art Center September 17\, followed by a public reception\, September 24 from 6 to 9pm. Docent tours will be available Tuesdays and Saturdays during the run of the show\, from 10am to noon and by appointment. Contact Gail Phinney\, Community Engagement Director\, at gphinney@pvartcenter.org to schedule an appointment. \n\nThe exhibition and accompanying catalogue chronicle the history of the school’s ambitious endeavor within the context of the wider cultural scene in Los Angeles\, revealing that a broader public than was previously known—one driven by educational rather than economic values—participated in the development of Southern California art. \n\nFrom 1919 to 1956\, students in the senior class selected\, purchased\, and donated some seventy-two works of art to the high school as class gifts. Over the years\, artists\, the federal art projects\, and other individuals and organizations also made many gifts of art to the collection. In 1923 Gardena High School designed a new auditorium to house the permanent collection\, establishing the first public art gallery in Southern California with a collection of regional art. Since the mid-1950s\, the collection has been in storage and unavailable for viewing by the public. The exhibition GIFTED: Collecting the Art of California at Gardena High School\, 1919- 1956 was originally exhibited at the Hilbert Museum of California Art in 2019. This presentation of GIFTED is the first for Los Angeles County\, where Gardena High School is located. PVAC is thankful to the organizers for sharing this important exhibition with our community.

For those unable to attend in person\, the curator talk portion of the event will be simultaneously held on Zoom\, followed by Q & A. \nRegister for Zoom at Eventbrite HERE.  \n  \n \nWater\, Earth & Fire installation view\, Norris Gallery \n  \nThe theme of the exhibition “Water\, Earth & Fire” is how ceramic artists combine the elements of water\, earth and fire to create beautiful\, impactful\, and often provocative ceramics that prompt engagement and contemplation.  \nWater symbolism can be found in almost all cultures\, spanning time and geographies. Curator Jo Lauria will discuss works on view in the exhibition that relate to the mythical and spiritual qualities of water\, and spotlight the works that provoke discussion about the global climate crisis\, ocean pollution\, and destruction of marine ecosystems. Looking closely at the ceramics in the galleries\, she will review the myriad pathways artist embrace to communicate their stories and connect with viewers of their work.  \nAlso included in the exhibition are works by current and past ceramics instructors and workshop artists. PVAC has maintained a well-equipped\, functioning ceramics studio since the late 1960s and many affiliated with the studio have achieved international acclaim\, including Philip Cornelius\, Rosaline Delisle\, Vivika and Otto Heino\, Yoshiro Ikeda\, Harrison McIntosh\, Adrian Saxe\, Peter Shire\, and Anna Silver. In this survey of over seventy pieces\, a wide range of forming methods\, surface designs\, and ideations are highlighted. The curator will identify the different techniques of wheel throwing and hand sculpting\, and approaches to glazing and firing that can be observed in the works on display.  \n  \n_________________________________________ \n  \nJo Lauria is a Los Angeles-based curator\, author\, and educator who received her curatorial training at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. SUMMARY:"Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking? Revelations!”
DESCRIPTION:“Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking? Revelations!”\nWith Bernard Fallon\, Bondo Wyszpolski\,\nand live music by Brad Webster\n\nNovember 6\, 2021\n2pm – 4pm\nFREE\nRegister at Eventbrite HERE\n\nPlease join us at Palos Verdes Art Center Saturday\, November 6th\, for a discussion about the beginnings and development of our current group exhibition\, “Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking?” The talk features participating artist Bernard Fallon and curator Bondo Wyszpolski\, with music performed by Brad Webster.\n\nIn order to curate a group show that would prompt the participants to make artworks outside their usual practice\, Bondo Wyszpolski invited 35 local artists to take part in an unusual Wheel of Fortune game at La Venta Inn in Palos Verdes Estates. The wheel was decked with fortune cookies; the standard fortune on a slip of paper was replaced with the title of the new art piece to be made by the spinner. For extra measure\, the artwork titles became song titles\, with new music composed and performed by Wyspolski’s long-time friend\, Brad Webster. Lyrics were written by Wyszpolski to expand on his titles. You can see the imaginative results in the Norris Gallery at PVAC and online HERE.\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: To safeguard the health of our employees\, students\, visitors\, affiliated groups and the community at large from infectious diseases\, such as COVID-19\, PVAC has adopted a mandatory vaccination policy. Effective October 31\, 2021\, all visitors must wear face masks and show proof of vaccination.\n\n\nWine courtesy of Peninsula magazine.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Botanical Print Magic
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Botanical Print Magic \nLinda Illumanardi \nPOSTPONED : DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED\n$155\, Members $125 \nREGISTER HERE \nIn this workshop\, students will learn the basics of the eco-print process on carefully washed and mordanted silk (a protein fiber)\, including the use of barriers\, lay-out\, and “bundling” tightly.  The role of the “iron blanket” (or carrier cloth) and the selection of the appropriate leaves will be addressed during class.  Leave the class with two beautiful charmeuse silk scarves\, and their accompanying transfer blankets (perfect for embroidery\, quilting\, sewing). $40 material fee paid to instructor. \nSupply List: apron\, tight-fitting gloves\, notebook pen\, scissors\, local leaves for printing and sharing \n__________________ \nBotanical Printing is a technique that requires the artist to learn to find and select leaves that have a certain amount of tannin\, acid\, and pigment that\, under intense heat\, forces the print onto scoured and naturally mordanted protein and cellulose fabrics. \nThe result is opening a magic “cocoon” called a bundle\, revealing the marvels of nature. Perfect for creatives who wish to add new skills & designs to their textile projects! \nStudents will learn \n\nTo select the correct leaves that give promising results\, understand the basics of the eco-print process on carefully washed and mordanted silk (a protein fiber)\, including the use of barriers\, lay-out\, and “bundling” tightly\nThe role of the “iron blanket” (or carrier cloth)\nLeave the class with two beautiful charmeuse silk scarves\, and their accompanying transfer blankets (perfect for embroidery\, quilting\, sewing)\n\nMaterials List: an apron\, tight fitting gloves\, a notebook & writing utensil\, scissors\, local leaves for printing and sharing \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nBIO \nLinda Illumanardi was born and raised in the mountains of Vermont\, toddling behind her grandmother reciting the names of local weeds\, flowers\, and trees. Now in California\, she does the same thing with her 3 grandsons\, basket in hand\, gathering gently leaves from trees that become the content and design of her books. Linda began eco-printing on paper\, to accompany her handmade book designs (artist book limited edition Otis College\, Los Angeles\, CA 2001\, published in Lark 500 Handmade Books\, second edition\, 8 collagraph plates). \nWith a Master’s degree in painting\, and multitudes of printing classes and residencies\, Linda loves to make impressions in each environment that she visits. She states\, “Whether in the forest or at the ocean\, or in the high desert\, there are always multitudes of textures\, colors\, and natural objects waiting to be immortalized.” \nWanting to expand her explorations\, Linda naturally shifted to making botanical prints on silk and wool\, cotton fibers\, leather and ceramics\, working as a mad scientist in her quiet studio in the foothills of the Angeles National Forest. Linda is clearly an artist in each world she inhabits.

SUMMARY:Special Mornings
DESCRIPTION:Special Mornings is a venerable Palos Verdes Art Center program serving the neediest segment of the population\, children and adults with special needs.  Special Mornings serves special education classes (ages 5 and up) throughout Los Angeles County.  These classes come from the poorest Title 1 schools.  Through art activities\, participants develop small motor skills\, learn to focus on a task and see a project through to completion.  They also develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills applicable to their academic curriculum. \nSpecial Mornings began in 1981 as a program for differently-abled students and has expanded to include special needs adults at Canyon Verde Activity Center in Redondo Beach.  Annually\, seven Title 1 LAUSD schools participate in a five-week sequential art education program teaching the basics of art\, enhancing the special needs students’ communication skills and self-esteem. Students come to the Art Center for their classes and also tour exhibitions\, all of which is provided free of charge\, including transportation. \nFor information\, contact Education Director Gail Phinney at gphinney@pvartcenter.org
