A long-time patron of the arts, she served as board president and also as executive director. Dr. Alpay continues to match fund contributions.
Maude Landon Receives Medici Award
Maude Landon received the Medici Award, the Art Center’s highest honor, at the Palos Verdes Art Center’s annual meeting. She is only the 11th person to receive the award, which is given for promoting the Art Center’s mission in significant ways and providing superlative leadership.
Stepping down after two years as board chairman, Landon also has been president, first vice president, second vice president and membership chairman. She belongs to The Circle and The Associates and, with husband Aaron, is an Art Patron.
Moving to Palos Verdes about 20 years ago, she dropped in “to see what the Art Center had to offer.”
“I was immediately impressed by the quality of its exhibitions, class offerings and fabulous outreach programs, and I loved The Artists’ Studio clothing. In addition, the people that greeted me were so welcoming and friendly that I joined on my first visit. I asked if there were any volunteer jobs to be done and she instantly recruited me to welcome guests at the front desk. I started the following week, and the rest is history. Once you walk into the Art Center, it has your heart for the rest of your life.”
Landon also belongs to the Norris Center for the Performing Arts Board of Trustees, Palos Verdes Peninsula Coordinating Council Board of Directors, Help the Homeless Help Themselves Board of Directors and Angels of Hope Board of Advisors. She has been honored as Citizen of the Year by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and PVP Rotary Club; Woman of the Year by both the YWCA and the Switzer Center, and Volunteer of the Year by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. She received the Norris Center’s Key to Our Hearts Award and was honored on the 20th anniversary of Help the Homeless Help Themselves.
Also honored were other superlative Art Center volunteers including Lifetime Award recipients Rita Bayer, who received the Medici in 2005 and continues to be an active volunteer; Richard Lohrer, chair of the Endowment Fund Trustees, and Ruth Wegener, who founded The Associates 30 years ago and is still an active member.
The Corporate Award was given to the Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation, and the Community Appreciation Award, to the Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance.
Gabrielle, who curated Wearable Expressions, received the Exceptional Volunteer Award for outstanding service and leadership. She has been the driving force behind all six wearable art exhibitions.

An exciting trio of evening events will be presented by The Associates, a Palos Verdes Art Center support group, on July 19, 20, and 26. These summer galas will feature inventive menus created and prepared by prominent Southern California chefs and served in magnificent Palos Verdes Peninsula settings.
Celebrate Chefs IV will include “Under the Tuscan Moon” on Saturday, July 19, 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the home of Jean and Charles Shriver; “Pirates of the Caribbean” on Sunday, July 20, 6-9 p.m. at the home of Gemma and Michael Kemps, and “An Evening in Andalusia” on Saturday, July 26, 6-9:30 p.m. at the home of Richard Colyear.
A native Italian and graduate of the Culinary Institute in Cerres, Enrico Glaudo of Frascati Ristorante, Rolling Hills Estates, will prepare a multi-course meal for the July 19 event. Featured in four motion pictures, the Shriver estate, a 1931 Tuscan-style farmhouse, provides an authentic pastoral backdrop for the feast.
Chef Glaudo, who has been nominated as a “Rising Star” by Restaurant Hospitality Magazine and the James Beard Foundation and who became sole proprietor and chef of Frascati Ristorante in 2006, has developed a menu that begins with such cocktail hour temptations such as Tuscan Beans Mousse and Marinated Shrimp Tart and Truffle, Spinach and Ricotta Tart and continues with Grilled Beef Tagliata with Balsamic Glaze and Rosemary and Garlic Marinated Pork Ribs. Tiramisu with Cappuccino Sauce and Chocolate Symphony with Passion Fruit Sauce are among the dessert choices.
In a Santa Barbara-style hillside villa that is home to an active young family, MASS Architecture and Designs will create a “Pirates of the Caribbean” ambience on July 20 with “sails” and a high seas feeling as a backdrop for tropical creations by Chef Humphrey Lansiquot of Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, El Segundo.
Award-winning Chef Humphrey was born and raised in St. Lucia and was with a major cruise line for eight years. He was Executive Chef for Morton’s of Chicago Steakhouse in Beverly Hills, among other positions, before joining Fleming’s as Chef Partner in 2007. His tantalizing passed creations will include Ahi Tuna Roll Ups, and Jerk Chicken Skewers. Some main course features are Wicked Cajun Barbecue Shrimp and grilled-to-order Filet Mignon Medallions Wrapped with Bacon. Two of the irresistible endings are Mini Chocolate Lava Cakes and Marinated Fresh Berries in Jamaican Rum Mango Sorbet.
Wrapping up Celebrate Chefs IV will be an Andalusian-themed evening Saturday, July 26 on Richard Colyear’s nine manicured acres in Rolling Hills. Well-known Chef Christine Brown of Restaurant Christine in Torrance has devised a sumptuous Spanish meal beginning with passed Tapas (appetizers) such as Spanish Omelet with Blue Crab and Wild Mushroom Turnovers in Puff Pastry.
Con La Familia (main dishes and sides) follow including Zarzuela de Mariscos (Shellfish and Seafood with Tomatoes, Herbs and Cava) and Estufado de Carne y Verduras (Braised Beef, Lamb, and Pork with Summer Vegetables). Postres (desserts) offered
include Peras Con Calabres (Blue Cheese Stuffed Poached Pears) and Flan de Manzana
(Caramelized Apple Flan).
Steeped in food since birth and a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Chef Christine has been recognized by Los Angeles Magazine as a top female chef in Los Angeles. Broad experience at a variety of popular southern California restaurants culminated in the opening of her perennially high-rated Restaurant Christine.
Guests at the Colyear “estancia” will be met with a glass of sangria and may stroll through the family gardens enjoying passed tapas prior to a sit-down meal and a Flamenco guitar performance. The sprawling property features a working barn, thoroughbred horses, exotic bird collection, boxwood maze, city light views and much more. Comfortable shoes are advised.
Each Celebrate Chefs IV event will feature live entertainment, complimentary premium wines and beverages, and unexpected memorable touches. Proceeds from the dinners benefit wide-ranging outreach programs, exhibitions, special events and education programs the Palos Verdes Art Center presents to the entire South Bay community.
